New Courses Available on Absorb

posted on September 21

The goal of the Absorb learning platform is to support educational opportunities for those seeking lay certification as well as equip local church leaders on a variety of topics to support their work. We have new classes available and more launching in the coming weeks! Read more about the four newly released classes below.

Finding Your Waypoint: Exploring Strengths with Rev. Adam Mustoe

A waypoint is the intersection of two coordinates. This course will utilize your CliftonStrengths assessment results to help you identify the intersection of your gifts, or strengths, and your call.

UMC Heritage and Theology

This course introduces the basic tenets of the United Methodist Church, including the means of grace, Book of Discipline and Articles of Religion, affirming creeds, and the Wesleyan understanding of grace.

Biblical Interpretation

This course introduces the basic principles of biblical interpretation. Together we’ll explore how the Bible came together, methods for interpreting scripture and helpful tools for biblical interpretation.

Preaching for Lay Education

This course focuses on preaching the gospel from the Old and New Testaments. Students will learn how to articulate a theology of proclamation, exegete biblical passages for preaching, and develop plans for ordering and delivering sermons in their context. Additionally, students will learn to evaluate sermons for scriptural integrity, theological soundness, pastoral sensitivity, and apply appropriate illustrations as they engage the Bible.

A Note About Lay Certification

UMC Heritage and Theology, Biblical Interpretation, and Preaching for Lay Education are three of four courses within the Digging Deeper pathway for laity learning and discernment. The fourth course, Leading Worship and Public Prayer, is already available on Absorb.
Courses on the Digging Deeper pathway are required for individuals pursuing either Certified Pulpit Supply or Certified Lay Minister in the Missouri Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. To learn more, visit www.moumethodist.org/laity.
